The life and times of Marie Lenormand
Marie Lenormand was born on 27 May 1772 in Alençon, Normandy, to Jean Louis Antoine Lenormand, a draper, and Marie Anne Lenormand (neé Gilbert). Madam Lenormand was orphaned at the age of five and educated in a convent school. She left Alençon for Paris in 1786.
She was a French professional fortune-teller, active for more than 40 years and of considerable fame during the Napoleonic era. Lenormand claimed to have given cartomantic advice to many famous persons, among them leaders of the French revolution (Marat, Robespierre and St-Just), Empress Josephine and Czar Alexander. In 1814 Lenormand started a second literary career and published many texts, causing many public controversies. Lenormand was imprisoned more than once, though never for very long. In France Lenormand is considered the greatest cartomancer of all time, highly influential on the wave of French cartomancy that began in the late 18th century.
She lived during a very turbulent time, and also predicted and consulted for Napoleon Bonaparte of France, as well as Maximilien de Robespierre, a famous revolutionist in France - who she informed in 1793 of his eventual death by beheading.
More often, Madam Lenormand worked for Napoleon and his wife, Josephine de Beauharnais. She predicted the crown for Napoleon, which was not thought possible, but occurred 10 years later for him in 1805.
She opened her own consultation room in 1790 and died in 1843, and left after her death some literature and tarot cards.
The Astro Mythological Tarot deck of cards was discovered at the beginning of the 19th century by Marie Anne Lenormand. It originated from the ordinary 54 card deck. Later on, some illustrations were added to these playing cards.
Madam Lenormand was also a very popular public figure. She remained unmarried throughout her life.
She was involved in mystical symbolism, and studied Greek-Roman, Egyptian Mythology, as well as Jewish Kabala religion.
